What is Reflexology? Reflexology is a complementary, non-invasive therapy using a
gentle but firm pressure to stimulate reflex areas found in the hands and
feet. Approximately 7,200 nerve endings form these reflex areas which
correspond to every part of the body, it is these reflexes that are worked
on during a session. Reflexology is not a massage. Why does it work? 85% of illnesses are created or worsened by stress. Stress
blocks energy throughout the body causing a waste buildup of lactic and
uric acids, calcium and various other by-products. Stimulating these
reflex areas breaks up blocked energy and waste, and improves circulation
to the area involved. The increase of blood and oxygen helps to relax
muscles, reducing stress in organs and glands, and causing a release of
toxins. The elimination system becomes more active in order to rid the
body of these toxins. It is important to drink 6-8 glasses of water within
24 hours after a session to assist the body with this cleansing. Learn more about the
importance of drinking water here. A Brief History Reflexology is not a new therapy; it has been practiced for
several thousand years. Its use can be found in many different cultures.
In the 1920s, two American physicians, Dr. William Fitzgerald and Dr. Joe
Shelby Riley, researched a technique from Germany known as "zone therapy".
This technique alleviates pain by applying pressure to specific parts of
the body. Reflexology, as we presently know it, is based on a method
developed by Eunice Ingham. She worked with Dr. Riley as his therapy
assistant in St. Petersburg, Florida. In the early 1930s, Ingham,
observing the great sensitivity of the feet, developed an approach to
promote healing and stress reduction by applying specific pressure to the
feet. The combination of zone therapy and Eunice Ingham's method of using
this therapy primarily on the feet, shaped the development of reflexology
in the United States. There are many different methods of reflexology
practiced today - no one is better than the other. All are equally
effective in assisting the client to achieve relaxation and
well-being. Providencia Morillo ©2001-2004 Rising Sun Touch Reflexology |
